Muharram ul Haram and Its Importance for Muslims

What is Muharram ul Haram?

The advent of a new Islamic year is marked by the arrival of the month of Muharram ul Haram. A month held in high esteem due to its sacred status given by the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.W).

Despite its varying observance. A common line of agreement is that Muharram is one of the four greatest months in the Islamic calendar. The other three being, Ramadan, Zill-Hajj and Dhu al-Qadah.

Meaning and Importance

The translation of the word Muharram is “forbidden.” The two main sects of Islam, the Sunni and Shia Muslims engage in its commemoration differently.

The Sunni Muslims fast during this month on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. With the latter date being known as Ashura. As a matter of remembrance of Prophet Moses (Peace be upon him) being granted victory by God over the Pharaoh of Egypt.

On the other hand, the Shia Muslims don’t fast during these days. Rather they keep away from all joyous activities. As a tribute to the sacrifice of Hussain ibn Ali (may God be pleased with him). The Prophet (S.A.W)’s grandson who was martyred in the Battle of Karbala that took place during these days.

The month of Muharram is regarded as one of the most conducive months of worship as it is a period of gaining immense reward by means of worship.
